Kettering University was founded in 1919 as the School of Automobile Trades in Flint, Michigan. It was established to meet the needs of the automotive industry and to provide a quality education for students interested in engineering, business, and science. The school began offering four-year degree programs in 1927 and changed its name to General Motors Institute (GMI) in 1932. GMI became an accredited university in 1982 and was renamed Kettering University after Charles Kettering, inventor, engineer, and former vice president of General Motors.

In 2008, it launched its first online degree program and now offers nearly 50 online degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
