Kenyon College, located in Gambier, Ohio, was founded in 1824 by Bishop Philander Chase. Originally known as the Kenyon Literary and Theological Institute, it was the first non-denominational college founded in the state of Ohio. The college’s mission was to provide an education that would prepare students for a life of service to their community and to the world.
In 1844, Kenyon College became one of the first colleges in the United States to admit women. This decision marked an important milestone for higher education and helped pave the way for more gender equality on college campuses. Throughout its history, Kenyon College has maintained a commitment to providing students with a rigorous liberal arts education that emphasizes critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
The college has also been committed to diversity since its founding days. In 1835, it appointed its first African American professor and began offering scholarships for African American students soon after. Today, Kenyon College is proud to be one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in America, offering a wide range of courses from different disciplines and perspectives. This commitment to diversity is evident in its student body as well: nearly half of all undergraduates are students of color or international students from around the world.
