Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is a private, historically black university located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1867 by the Presbyterian Church, JCSU is one of the oldest HBCUs in the United States. The institution was established as Biddle Memorial Institute to educate newly freed African-Americans after the Civil War. In 1923, the school changed its name to Johnson C. Smith University in honor of its major benefactor, Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith of Tennessee.
