Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 by philanthropist and entrepreneur Johns Hopkins. The university was the first research university in the United States and has been credited with revolutionizing American higher education. The university is named after Johns Hopkins, who had bequeathed $7 million to establish the university and two affiliated institutions: the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which opened in 1889, and the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, which opened in 1893.
