John Carroll University was founded in 1886 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The university was named after John Carroll, the first Catholic Bishop in the United States. It started as a small college with only two professors and six students. Over the years, it grew and eventually expanded to include a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1976, it became co-educational and began admitting women into its student body.
In 1983, John Carroll became the first Catholic university in Ohio to offer an MBA program. In 2000, the University opened its Boler School of Business which is now home to over 2,000 students each year. The Boler School has consistently been ranked as one of the top business schools in Ohio and is accredited by AACSB International. In addition to its business school, John Carroll also offers a variety of other academic programs such as nursing, education, engineering and theology.
