Ithaca College was founded in 1892 as a music conservatory. It was originally located in downtown Ithaca, New York and was known as the Ithaca Conservatory of Music. The school was founded by William Grant Egbert, a local businessman, who wanted to provide an opportunity for young musicians to receive instruction in the arts. In 1916, the school moved to its current location on South Hill and changed its name to Ithaca College. The college’s first president was William B. Bartlett, who served from 1916-1925. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of many of the college’s buildings including Egbert Hall, which is now home to the School of Music. After Bartlett’s departure, Robert J. Lavignino took over as president and served until 1942 when he retired due to poor health.
In 1945, Dr. Glenn Capp became president and led Ithaca College through its initial period of growth and expansion during the post-war years. He increased enrollment from 250 students to over 1500 students by 1955 and added several new academic programs including business administration and physical education/athletics. Under Capp’s leadership, Ithaca College also joined what is now called the State University of New York system in 1948 which allowed for greater access to state funding for capital projects such as dormitories and other campus buildings. His tenure ended in 1972 when he retired after 27 years at the helm of Ithaca College. Check eshaoxing for more universities.
