Iowa Wesleyan College was founded in 1842 and is the oldest coeducational institution of higher learning in Iowa. The college was founded by Dr. Isaac Baldwin, a Methodist minister from Massachusetts who moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, in 1841. The college was originally called the Mount Pleasant Female Seminary and focused on providing educational opportunities for young women. In 1845, the name was changed to Iowa Wesleyan University and it became the first coeducational institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi River.
In 1865, the university began offering four-year degrees for both men and women and by 1870 it had become one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the Midwest. In 1890, Iowa Wesleyan College was established as a separate institution from its parent university, offering bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts as well as teacher education courses. In 1909, it became a full four-year college with a broad curriculum that included courses in business administration and engineering. Throughout its history, Iowa Wesleyan has maintained its commitment to providing quality education to all students regardless of their backgrounds or financial means. Today, Iowa Wesleyan College is an independent liberal arts college offering more than 40 majors and minors across five academic divisions.
