Iowa State University was founded in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. It was the first land-grant university in the United States and the first college west of the Mississippi to be designated a land-grant university. The college’s mission was to teach agriculture, horticulture, and mechanical arts. By 1899, Iowa State had become one of the nation’s leading colleges of agriculture and home economics. In 1958, it became Iowa State University of Science and Technology. It adopted its current name in 1959.
The campus has grown significantly over the years, with new buildings being constructed for research, teaching, and student life. The campus now covers over 2000 acres and is home to more than 34,000 students from all 50 states and over 100 countries worldwide. The university is renowned for its contributions to science and technology; it has produced 15 Nobel Prize winners since 1901.
