Inter American University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan Campus was founded in 1912 as the Inter American College, a private institution of higher learning. The school was founded by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church who wanted to provide quality education to the citizens of Puerto Rico. The school was originally located in Old San Juan before moving to its current location in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

The college initially focused on providing a liberal arts education but soon began offering courses in business and law as well.
