Indiana University Southeast was founded in 1941 as an extension of Indiana University Bloomington. Originally located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, the university was known as Indiana University Jeffersonville. In 1950, the university relocated to New Albany, Indiana and changed its name to Indiana University Southeast. Initially offering only upper-division and graduate courses, the university began offering four-year degrees in 1969. By 1971, all undergraduate programs had been moved from IU Bloomington to IU Southeast.
In 1996, IU Southeast opened a new campus in downtown New Albany which included a library and classrooms for both undergraduate classes and graduate classes. The campus also included a bookstore and student services center. The university continued to grow over the years with the opening of a health sciences building in 1997 and an education building in 2003. In 2007, IU Southeast opened its first residence hall which allowed students to live on campus for the first time ever at IU Southeast. Today, IU Southeast offers over 50 undergraduate majors and concentrations as well as several master’s degree programs including business administration, education, nursing, public administration and social work. The university also has a thriving athletic program with 15 varsity sports teams competing at the NCAA Division II level. With more than 7500 students enrolled each year from over 30 countries around the world, IU Southeast is committed to providing quality education for all its students regardless of background or nationality.
