Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) was founded in 1875 as Indiana Normal School, a two-year teacher’s college. The mission of the school was to train teachers who would go on to teach in the public schools of Pennsylvania. Over the years, IUP has grown and evolved into a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of fields. In 1927, the school became Indiana State Teachers College and then changed its name again in 1959 to Indiana State College.
