Indiana University East was founded in 1971 as a regional campus of Indiana University. It was originally located in Richmond, Indiana, and offered two-year degree programs for students interested in pursuing higher education close to home. Over the next several decades, IU East grew significantly and began offering four-year degrees in 1987. In 1995, IU East moved to its current location on the east side of Richmond and opened a new library, housing more than 200,000 volumes.
