Indiana University at Bloomington was founded in 1820 as the Indiana State Seminary. In 1828, the school was renamed Indiana College and officially chartered by the state of Indiana. The college grew rapidly and in 1838 it became Indiana University. It quickly gained recognition for its quality education, and in 1851 IU became one of the first public universities to admit women. IU Bloomington continued to grow over the following decades and by 1970 had become one of the largest campuses in the United States. IU Bloomington is now home to more than 40,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, making it one of the most diverse universities in the Midwest. The university offers more than 550 academic programs across its eight undergraduate schools and colleges, along with its graduate school offering more than 200 master’s degrees and numerous doctoral programs.
