The Indiana Institute of Technology was founded in 1930 as the Indiana Technical College, with a mission to provide quality technical education for working adults. The college was initially located in Fort Wayne, Indiana and offered classes in engineering, drafting, and machine shop. Over the next several decades, the college expanded its offerings to include more technical and vocational programs such as automotive technology, electrical technology, and heating and cooling technology. In 1964, the college changed its name to Indiana Institute of Technology (IIT) in order to better reflect its mission and vision of providing quality technical education.
In 1970 IIT opened a second campus in South Bend which focused on providing associate degree programs. This expansion allowed IIT to reach a larger number of students who were unable to attend classes at the Fort Wayne campus due to distance or other factors. In 1982 IIT opened its third campus in Indianapolis which introduced bachelor’s degree programs in various fields such as business administration and computer science. Since then IIT has continued to expand its campuses across the state of Indiana as well as increasing the range of courses offered at each location. Today IIT offers associate’s degrees through certificate programs at seven campuses across Indiana covering topics such as engineering technology, healthcare administration, information systems technology and more.
