Illinois State University was founded in 1857 when the Illinois General Assembly established the Illinois State Normal University. The university was created to provide a normal school for aspiring teachers and has since evolved into a comprehensive public university. The first classes were held in 1857, with an enrollment of twelve students, and by 1860 the student body had grown to over 500. In 1865, the university was renamed Illinois State Normal University due to its focus on teacher preparation. In 1895, the school’s name changed again to its current name of Illinois State University.

In 1960, ISU experienced a period of tremendous growth as enrollment surged past 5,000 students for the first time ever. As part of this period of growth and expansion, many new buildings were constructed on campus including the Milner Library in 1963 and Schroeder Hall in 1966. During this same period, several new academic programs were also added including a doctoral program in 1971 and an MBA program in 1972. Check MEDICINELEARNERS.COM for a list of medical schools in Oregon.

Since then ISU has continued to expand its academic offerings with more than 160 undergraduate majors and programs and over 100 graduate degrees available today. With nearly 20,000 students enrolled today from all 50 states as well as numerous countries around the world, ISU is one of the largest universities in Illinois and one of the most respected institutions of higher education nationwide.
