The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) was founded in 1890 as the Lewis Institute. The school was founded by the estate of hardware merchant and investor Allen C. Lewis and focused on providing technical training to local residents. In 1940, the school merged with Armour Institute to become the Illinois Institute of Technology. IIT is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States and continues to be a leader in technology-focused education today.
