Humboldt State University was founded in 1913 as a normal school, which trained teachers for the region’s rural schools. The school was small and only accepted fifty students during its first year. The curriculum focused on teaching methods and education theory. As the region grew, so did the demand for higher education. In 1921, Humboldt State Normal School became Humboldt State Teachers College and began to offer bachelor’s degrees in education and liberal arts. In 1935, the college became part of the California State College system. This allowed it to expand its course offerings to include business, science and engineering classes. In 1969, Humboldt State College officially became a university and changed its name to Humboldt State University.
Since then, HSU has continued to grow and develop, offering more than 100 majors in fields such as business administration, computer science, environmental studies, marine biology and forestry. It also offers master’s programs in social work, natural resource planning and management, nursing and education. The university is known for its commitment to sustainability initiatives such as energy conservation efforts and green building projects. It recently opened a new residence hall that received LEED Platinum certification for its energy efficiency design features. With more than 8500 students enrolled each year from around the world, HSU continues its mission of providing quality higher education in northern California.
