Howard Payne University (HPU) was founded in 1889 by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It is located in Brownwood, Texas and is affiliated with the Baptist Church. HPU was originally known as Howard Payne College, named after Edward Howard Payne, a minister who served as the first president of the college. Initially, classes were held in a private residence until a permanent building was constructed in 1890. The school grew steadily over the years and eventually began offering graduate degrees in 1949.
In 1953, HPU moved to its current location and changed its name to Howard Payne University to reflect its expanded offerings. Over the years, HPU has seen many changes and expansions. In 1971, it opened its first residence hall and today there are four residential halls on campus that house over 400 students each year. In addition to traditional undergraduate programs, HPU now offers online degree programs for adult learners as well as other specialized academic programs such as a nursing program and an honors program for high achieving students. The university also has several athletic teams that compete at the NCAA Division III level and offers a wide range of activities for students including intramural sports and student organizations such as Greek life, student government and spiritual life groups.
