Holy Cross College was founded in 1867 as an all-male college in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was the first Catholic college in New England and the first college to be run by the Congregation of Holy Cross. The school was founded by Rev. Thomas F. Price, a French priest who had emigrated to the United States and who had been inspired by a visit to Notre Dame University. Since its founding, Holy Cross has grown from a small, all-male liberal arts college to a larger university offering more than 50 majors and concentrations for undergraduate students and several master’s programs.
In 1950, Holy Cross became co-educational when it admitted its first female students. In 1971, the school became known as College of the Holy Cross when it granted its first graduate degrees in theology and philosophy. Over the years, Holy Cross has continued to expand its academic offerings and research opportunities for students. Today, it is home to more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from across the United States and around the world who come together in an intimate campus community where they can pursue their academic goals while engaging with one another both inside and outside of the classroom.
