Hobart and William Smith Colleges were established in Geneva, New York in 1822. The Colleges are named after two British philanthropists, John Hobart and Henry William Smith. Hobart was the Bishop of London and Smith was his nephew. With their generous donations, these two men provided the necessary funds to enable the development of a college in Geneva. The original plan was for a single college, but eventually, it evolved into two separate colleges, Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women.
The first president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges was Bishop John Henry Hobart who served from 1822 to 1830. During his tenure as president, he worked hard to ensure that the Colleges would be successful and that they would provide a quality education to its students. He also worked with other local churches to ensure that the students had access to religious services while attending the Colleges.
In the years since its founding, Hobart and William Smith have continued to grow and flourish under various presidents who have helped shape its mission and identity over time. In 1895, President James Houghton laid out a plan for the future of the Colleges which included expanding course offerings in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This initiative has allowed students at both colleges access to an education focused on preparing them for success in these fields as well as many others. Additionally, initiatives such as The Summer Science Program (SSP) were developed during this time by President Houghton’s successor President George Lincoln Burr; this program has enabled students from all over the world to study at both colleges throughout their summer breaks since its inception in 1897.
