High Point University was founded in 1924 by Dr. James E. Brewer and his wife, Hattie, as High Point College. It was created to provide educational opportunities for the people of North Carolina and the surrounding areas. The college operated out of a two-room schoolhouse in downtown High Point until it moved to its current location in 1941. For the first few decades, High Point College focused on providing an education rooted in Christian values and traditions. This also included a strong sense of service and community involvement among its students. In 1989, the school changed its name to High Point University to better reflect its mission of providing a quality education and expanding opportunities for students from all walks of life. Since then, the university has grown significantly, adding new programs and facilities while maintaining its commitment to service and faith-based learning.
