Henderson State University was founded in 1890 as Arkadelphia Methodist College and was the first institution of higher learning in the state of Arkansas. The college was renamed Henderson-Brown College in 1906, after two prominent Methodist ministers, James L. Henderson and William M. Brown. In 1915, it became Henderson State Teachers College, and in 1967 it finally achieved university status when it changed its name to Henderson State University.
Since then, Henderson has grown significantly in size and scope. Today, the university offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and minors as well as several master’s degree programs across five academic colleges: Arts and Humanities; Business; Education; Natural Science and Mathematics; and Social Sciences. The university also offers students a variety of extracurricular activities such as student organizations, intramural sports, club sports, concerts, theatre productions, lectures, seminars and more.
Henderson also has a strong commitment to service learning for its students by providing them with opportunities to gain real-world experience through internships with local businesses or volunteer work with community organizations. Furthermore, the university is proud to have been recognized for its commitment to sustainability by being named one of only four “Tree Campus USA” universities in Arkansas for its efforts at preserving the environment on campus through conservation initiatives such as energy efficient building designs and recycling programs.
