Harvey Mudd College was founded in 1955 by a group of Southern California business and civic leaders who wanted to provide a quality education to the region’s residents. The college was named after Harvey Mudd, a prominent engineer and philanthropist who had recently died. The college opened its doors in 1957 with an initial enrollment of just over 100 students.
In the early years, the college focused on providing engineering and science education to its students. Over time, it expanded its offerings to include mathematics, computer science, physics, and chemistry. In 1983, Harvey Mudd College became part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, which allowed it to offer even more courses and educational opportunities. With the addition of humanities courses such as history and literature in 1993, Harvey Mudd College began offering a more comprehensive liberal arts education. Today, Harvey Mudd College is one of the most selective undergraduate institutions in the country with an acceptance rate of only 16%. It has also become known for its innovative curriculum that combines rigorous academics with real-world experience through internships and research projects.
