Hampshire College was founded in 1965 as an alternative to traditional higher education. It was the first college of its kind in the United States, and one of the first to emphasize student-directed learning. The college has since been recognized for its innovative approach to teaching and learning, and for its commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability. Hampshire has a long history of breaking new ground in higher education. In its early years, it was one of the first colleges in the country to allow students to design their own course of study, and it was also among the first institutions to institute a need-blind admissions policy. In addition, Hampshire was one of the first colleges in the United States to offer a degree program in Women’s Studies, as well as being an early leader in LGBTQ rights on campus. Over time, Hampshire has continued to innovate and evolve with changing student needs. Today, Hampshire offers more than 50 majors and concentrations across three schools: School of Cognitive Science; School of Cultural Studies; and School of Natural Science & Mathematics. In addition, students are able to pursue self-designed concentrations or interdisciplinary minors that allow them to explore their interests outside traditional academic disciplines. Through its innovative curriculum model, Hampshire provides a unique opportunity for students who want an education that is both rigorous and flexible at the same time.
