Hamilton College was founded in 1793 and is located in Clinton, New York. It is a private liberal arts college, and was originally named the Hamilton-Oneida Academy. The school was established by Reverend Samuel Kirkland, who had previously founded a mission school for the Oneida Indians of Central New York. The school initially offered courses in mathematics and natural sciences, as well as classes in Latin and Greek. In 1812, it became Hamilton College after receiving a charter from the state of New York.
In 1814, Hamilton’s first president, Eliphalet Nott, was appointed to lead the college. Under his leadership, enrollment increased significantly and the curriculum expanded to include English literature and composition. In 1821, Nott also introduced elective courses for students to choose from. This move allowed students to pursue their own interests more deeply than ever before, setting Hamilton apart from other colleges at the time.
During this period of growth and expansion, several new buildings were erected on campus including the chapel (1827), South Hall (1829), North Hall (1835), Andrews Hall (1851) and Kirkland Hall (1856). These buildings served as a physical manifestation of Hamilton’s commitment to providing its students with a quality education that would prepare them for their future endeavors.
Throughout its history Hamilton College has remained committed to excellence in teaching and learning while also embracing change when necessary. In 1998 it became one of only three colleges in the nation to offer an interdisciplinary program in Asian Studies with an emphasis on Chinese language instruction; it also began offering programs abroad in 1999 through its Study Abroad Program which now offers over 60 programs around the world each year. More recently it has begun implementing new initiatives such as green initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts on campus as well as strengthening ties between alumni and current students through various mentoring programs.
