Grove City College was founded in 1876 by Isaac C. Ketler, a Presbyterian minister and educator. He believed that education should be accessible to all students regardless of their financial means. He also wanted to provide students with an education that was rooted in Christian values and principles. The school opened its doors to its first class of 25 students on September 5, 1876.
The college went through many changes during the early years, adding new programs and expanding its student body. In 1919, the college began offering women the same educational opportunities as men for the first time. The college also added a new four-year program in 1925, which allowed students to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree for the first time. During World War II, Grove City College was one of only two colleges in Pennsylvania that remained open throughout the war. In 1965, it became one of the first colleges in America to become fully coeducational and allowed female students to enroll in all programs and activities offered at the school.
