Green Mountain College Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

Green Mountain College was founded in 1834 by the Reverend Edward Thomson, a Baptist minister from Vermont. It was originally established as a seminary to educate the children of local farmers and tradespeople. In 1837, the name of the school was changed to Green Mountain Literary and Scientific Institute and it began to offer college-level courses. The school continued to expand its curriculum over the years, and in 1895 it was granted a charter by the State of Vermont and became Green Mountain College.

The early years of Green Mountain College were characterized by an emphasis on classical education with courses in literature, science, mathematics, philosophy, and religion. In the early 20th century, Green Mountain College began to diversify its offerings to include such fields as business administration and education. During this period, the college also established strong ties with nearby communities through internships and community service programs. The college continued to grow throughout the 20th century; in 1954 it achieved accreditation from the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) and has since become one of only a few colleges in Vermont accredited by NEASC. Today, Green Mountain College offers more than 30 undergraduate majors as well as master’s degrees in business administration and environmental studies.
