Governors State University is a public university located in University Park, Illinois. Established in 1969, the university was created by the Illinois General Assembly as an upper-level institution to serve the educational needs of south suburban Chicago. The university was originally known as Governors State College and changed its name to Governors State University in 1975. The first classes were held at a local high school in Park Forest, Illinois and moved to its current location in 1971.

Since then, GSU has grown significantly and now offers more than 40 degree programs across five colleges: Arts and Sciences; Business and Public Administration; Education; Health Sciences; and Humanities and Social Sciences.
