Gonzaga University was founded in 1887 by the Society of Jesus, a Catholic order of priests and brothers. It was the first university established in the Pacific Northwest. The Jesuit mission of Gonzaga is to provide a faith-based learning environment where students are encouraged to develop their full potential through academic excellence, spiritual growth, and service to others.
The university has seen much growth and development over the past 130 years. In 1909, Gonzaga moved from its original location on Spokane’s South Hill to its current campus on the north side of town. This move allowed for continued expansion and enrollment growth. In 1926, Gonzaga College became Gonzaga University and began offering graduate degrees in 1929. The university has since grown to include more than 7,000 students and offers more than 80 undergraduate majors as well as more than 35 graduate programs.
Gonzaga has also become a leader in social justice initiatives, with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism work on campus. The university has taken steps toward creating an environment where all members of the community can feel welcomed and respected regardless of their race or ethnicity. Gonzaga’s commitment to social justice is reflected in its curriculum offerings as well as its student organizations that focus on issues such as immigration rights and gender equality.
