Georgia Southwestern State University, formerly known as Third District Agricultural and Mechanical School, was founded in 1906 by the Georgia General Assembly. Located in Americus, GA the school was established to provide educational and training opportunities for the rural population of southwest Georgia. The curriculum focused on agriculture, home economics and industry, with courses such as animal husbandry, canning and preserving fruits and vegetables as well as carpentry, blacksmithing and sewing.
In 1925, the school was renamed South Georgia State Normal College (SGSC) to reflect its expanded mission of providing teacher education programs. In 1929 SGSC became one of the first state-supported four-year institutions in Georgia offering a Bachelor of Science degree. The college continued to grow during this time period with an increase in student enrollment from 90 students in 1929 to over 1,000 by 1950. During this time period SGSC also underwent several name changes including South Georgia Teachers College (1932), Georgia Teachers College (1943), and finally Georgia Southwestern College (1950).
In 1972 GSWC underwent another name change when it became a member unit of the University System of Georgia. At that time it became known as Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). Today GSW is a comprehensive institution offering more than 40 majors leading to undergraduate degrees as well as master’s degrees in business administration and education. The university also has a vibrant campus life with more than 70 student organizations ranging from academic honor societies to recreational sports clubs. GSW is also home to many cultural events such as art exhibits, musical performances, theatre productions and lectures throughout the year which further enrich its campus community.
