Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) was established in 1828 as the Medical Academy of Georgia. It was the first medical school in the state and one of the oldest in the country. The school was located on Telfair Street in Augusta, and its mission was to provide quality medical education to Georgians. In 1873, it became a four-year college and changed its name to Medical College of Georgia. In 1896, it moved to a new location on McDowell Street, where it remains today.

Throughout its history, GHSU has grown and evolved with time. In 1922, it became an independent institution from its parent organization, the University System of Georgia. This allowed GHSU to expand its programs beyond medicine and into nursing, health sciences, allied health sciences, biotechnology and biomedical research. Further expansion came in 2012 when GHSU merged with Augusta State University to form a new university called Georgia Regents University (GRU). In 2013, GRU changed its name again to Georgia Health Sciences University due to a growing emphasis on health sciences research and education across all academic disciplines at the university. Today GHSU offers over 200 degree programs ranging from associate’s degrees to doctoral degrees as well as certificate programs. It is also home to six colleges: College of Allied Health Sciences; College of Dental Medicine; College of Graduate Studies; College of Medicine; College of Nursing; and Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
