Georgia College & State University (GCSU) was founded in 1889 as the Georgia Normal and Industrial College. It was the first public college in Georgia created specifically for women. The school was designed to provide instruction in the areas of teacher training, industrial education, and home economics. In 1922, the school became co-educational and changed its name to Georgia State College for Women. It eventually began offering undergraduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines and changed its name again to Georgia College & State University in 1996.
In 1998, GCSU became part of the University System of Georgia, which allowed it to expand its degree programs even further. Since then, GCSU has evolved from a small liberal arts college into one of the most respected universities in the state. The university now offers undergraduate degrees in more than 70 majors and a variety of master’s degree programs as well as doctoral degrees in nursing practice and educational specialist programs.
