Gallaudet University was founded in 1864 as the first school for the deaf and hard of hearing. The school was originally named the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons, but was changed to Gallaudet University in 1986. The university is located in Washington, D.C., and has a long and proud history as a leader in deaf education.
The school’s first president, Edward Miner Gallaudet, was a pioneer in advocating for the rights of the deaf community. He fought to make sure that those with hearing impairments had access to a quality education and worked tirelessly to ensure that they had access to all aspects of mainstream society. This included helping establish organizations such as the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and lobbying for laws that gave deaf Americans equal rights under the law.
Gallaudet University has also been at the forefront of research into deafness and hearing impairment throughout its history. In addition to offering courses on sign language, audiology, linguistics, psychology, and more, it is also home to numerous research centers dedicated to improving life for those with hearing impairments. These include centers devoted to studying cochlear implants and how they can be used more effectively; communication technology; medical treatments; education programs; employment opportunities; mental health services; social services; legal assistance; and much more.
