Gainesville State College was founded in 1964 as a two-year college and was initially known as Gainesville Junior College. The college was established to provide an affordable education to the citizens of the surrounding area and to meet the increasing need for higher education in Hall County. In 1986, the college became part of the University System of Georgia and was renamed Gainesville State College. The additional four-year degree programs offered by the college allowed it to become a comprehensive institution with a wide range of degree offerings.

Over its fifty-six year history, Gainesville State College has grown significantly. In 1998, the college opened its first branch campus in Oconee County, allowing students from that area to have access to higher education. In 2000, Gainesville State College opened its Cumming Campus, which was followed by their Alpharetta Campus in 2006. These campuses have enabled many students who would not otherwise have access to higher education to attend classes close to home and complete their degrees at an affordable cost.
