Fresno Pacific University was founded in 1944 by the Pacific District Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. It began as the Pacific Bible Institute (PBI) with a mission to provide students with a quality education rooted in the Christian faith. The school offered a four-year program which focused on training pastors and church leaders. In 1965, PBI became Fresno Pacific College and continued to expand its curriculum to include liberal arts and professional studies. In 1977, Fresno Pacific College became an accredited university, changing its name to Fresno Pacific University (FPU).

Since then, FPU has continued to grow and evolve. In 2001, the university opened its main campus in Fresno, California. FPU currently offers undergraduate and graduate degrees from five schools: School of Business; School of Education; School of Natural Sciences; School of Humanities, Religion & Social Sciences; and School of Music & Worship Arts. The university also offers online degree programs through their Center for Professional Development. FPU has created many unique opportunities for students such as internships, research projects and study abroad programs that allow them to gain real-world experience while developing marketable skills that will help them succeed in their chosen field after graduation.
