Founded in 1839, Framingham State University (FSU) is the oldest public institution of higher education in Massachusetts. Located in Framingham, Massachusetts, the University began as a teacher-training school. The first classes were held in a local high school building with an enrollment of 37 students and four instructors. In 1923, the school became a state normal school and was granted degree-granting authority by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1932 it was renamed Framingham State Teachers College and began offering four-year degrees in education.
In 1960, FSU began offering master’s degrees and changed its name to Framingham State College. In 2010, FSU was granted university status and became known as Framingham State University. Over time, FSU has grown significantly both in size and academic offerings. Today the University offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and concentrations as well as 25 graduate programs. The University also maintains a strong commitment to service learning and community engagement through its Center for Civic Engagement which offers opportunities for students to get involved with local organizations through internships, service projects, volunteerism, classes and research projects.
