Fort Valley State University is a historically black university located in Fort Valley, Georgia. Founded in 1895 by the Freedmen’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, it was originally called Fort Valley High and Industrial School. It was designed to educate African Americans in the region who were unable to attend other institutions of higher learning due to segregation. The school grew over time, adding a college-level program in 1923 and becoming known as Fort Valley State College. In 1939, it was officially designated as a four-year institution and granted full university status in 1996. Over the years, FVSU has seen many notable alumni, including Coretta Scott King and Maynard H. Jackson Jr., both former mayors of Atlanta; civil rights activist Julian Bond; and Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize-winning author. FVSU has also been recognized for its academic excellence with numerous awards from organizations such as U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review.
