Fort Lewis College was founded in 1911 as a result of the vision of local citizens in Durango, Colorado. Initially, the school was called Fort Lewis A&M and it was a two-year college that provided military training for its students. In 1923, the school began offering four-year degrees and its name changed to Fort Lewis College. The college now offers 49 majors, minors, and concentrations ranging from Business Administration to Environmental Studies. Over the past century, Fort Lewis has grown into a comprehensive regional liberal arts college with four academic divisions: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education & Professional Studies, and Health Sciences & Human Performance.

In addition to providing students with an outstanding education in their chosen field of study, Fort Lewis College continues to live up to its mission of providing access to higher education for all students regardless of their background or financial status. The college awards more than $22 million annually in scholarships and grants for tuition assistance and provides many other services such as academic advising and career counseling. In 2019 alone, more than 1,000 scholarships were awarded by FLC totaling over $2 million in aid for tuition assistance. The school also offers special programs such as the Native American Academic Center which helps indigenous students gain access to higher education opportunities and succeed at FLC.

Fort Lewis College is a public university located in Durango, Colorado. It is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state, having been founded in 1911. The college offers over 40 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as several graduate programs.
