Florida Southern College was founded in 1883 by the Reverend Francis Humphreys and Dr. James Forbes of the Congregational Church. It is the oldest private college in Florida and the oldest four-year college in Polk County. The school was originally located in Sutherland, Florida, but moved to its current location of Lakeland, Florida in 1911.
