The Florida Institute of Technology was founded in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College. It was established to serve the rapidly growing space industry in Central Florida. The college was originally located in Cocoa, but moved to Melbourne in 1965. The school changed its name to Florida Institute of Technology in 1966 and began offering graduate degrees. In the 1970s, the university added a number of degree programs, including business and psychology, to its offerings. In 1979, it merged with the nearby University of South Florida-Melbourne and became a four-year university.
In the 1980s, the university continued to grow and expand its academic offerings. It opened a new campus in Orlando and began offering doctoral programs for engineering and science students. The college also opened a new library on campus that provided students with access to online resources such as databases and journals. By 1990, Florida Tech had become one of the top universities in the state with more than 8,000 students enrolled at its main campus and satellite locations across Central Florida. Today, it is home to more than 16,000 students from around the world studying a variety of disciplines including engineering, computer science, business administration and more.
