Florida Atlantic University was founded in 1961 and opened its doors to students in 1964. It was established as the first public university in South Florida and has since become a major research institution. The university is located on the east coast of Florida, just south of West Palm Beach. FAU is a four-year, coeducational, public university offering more than 180 degree programs across its 10 colleges.

In 1976, FAU became an autonomous institution with its own Board of Trustees and began to expand rapidly.
