Florida A&M University (FAMU) is a public, historically black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. Founded in 1887, FAMU is the oldest historically black university in the state of Florida and one of the largest historically black universities in the United States. The university was founded as a response to racial segregation within higher education and was established to provide high-quality educational opportunities for African Americans in Florida.
FAMU’s first president was Thomas DeSaille Tucker, an African American educator from Georgia who had previously worked as a professor at Tuskegee Institute. With Tucker’s leadership and direction, FAMU grew quickly and by 1890 had an enrollment of over 500 students. Over the years, FAMU has grown both physically and academically. In 1953, it became one of the first four-year institutions in Florida to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). It also became a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in 1984, allowing it to receive additional funding for its programs and activities.
