Fitchburg State University was founded in 1894 as the state’s first normal school, or teacher-training school. The school was located in the city of Fitchburg and offered two-year teacher training programs to its students. In 1932, the school became a four-year college and changed its name to Fitchburg State Teachers College. It continued to offer education courses focused on preparing students for teaching careers until 1951, when the college began offering a broader range of liberal arts courses. In 1965, the name of the college was changed to Fitchburg State College and it began offering graduate degrees for the first time. In 2010, Fitchburg State College became Fitchburg State University to reflect its growth and expansion over the past century. Since then, the university has continued to grow and expand its academic offerings while staying true to its commitment of providing quality education for all students.
