Ferris State University was founded in 1884 as the Big Rapids Industrial School. It was established by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, who later became governor of Michigan, as a school to provide practical training in industrial and mechanical skills to rural youth. The school quickly grew in popularity and size, and in 1905 it was renamed Ferris Institute. In 1949, the institute began offering four-year degrees and was granted university status. Over the next several decades, the university expanded its curriculum to include numerous undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1987, it became known as Ferris State University and established its College of Pharmacy. Today, Ferris State University is home to more than 14,000 students from across the United States and around the world. It offers more than 170 degree programs through its 13 colleges and schools.
