Farmingdale State College at SUNY was established in 1912 as a school of agriculture. It began with just 25 students and offered courses in dairy technology, crop production, animal husbandry, and horticulture. The original building, located on Main Street in Farmingdale, New York, was built to serve as both a residence hall and a classroom. In the beginning of the 20th century, Farmingdale State College was called the New York State School of Agriculture on Long Island. As time went on it began to offer more courses such as business and engineering. In 1929 the school was renamed Farmingdale State College of Applied Science and Technology to reflect its expanded curriculum.
In the 1950s Farmingdale introduced new programs such as nursing and education that quickly grew in popularity among students. During this period the student population rose from 500 students to over 2000 students. In response to this growth, several new buildings were constructed on campus including two student residence halls and an academic center for nursing studies. The college also acquired additional land for athletic fields and green spaces for outdoor recreation.
In the 1960s Farmingdale became part of SUNY (State University of New York) which allowed it to expand its academic offerings further by introducing graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) fields as well as business administration degrees. Today Farmingdale is home to over 9500 undergraduate and graduate students studying in more than 80 different programs ranging from health sciences to aviation management. The college has also added a number of research centers focusing on various areas such as advanced manufacturing technologies and renewable energy sources which have helped make it one of the most respected colleges in New York State.
