Fairleigh Dickinson University was established in 1942 as a two-year junior college. It was founded by Dr. Peter Sammartino and his wife Sylvia, who wanted to provide higher education opportunities to the working class of northern New Jersey. The first classes were held in Rutherford, New Jersey, and the school quickly grew to include four-year degree programs. In 1948, Fairleigh Dickinson became an official four-year college, with its first graduates receiving their degrees in 1950. In 1958, the university moved to its present location in Teaneck, New Jersey and began offering graduate programs. It soon gained recognition from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and began expanding its academic offerings with new departments and degree programs. In 1967, FDU opened a second campus in Florham Park, New Jersey and began offering doctoral degrees as well as various professional certificate programs. Since then, FDU has continued to expand its academic offerings and student body size by adding more campuses throughout the United States and launching online learning initiatives for students around the globe. Today, Fairleigh Dickinson University is one of the largest private universities in the country with over 11000 students enrolled across its seven campuses located in four different states.
