Fairfield University was founded in 1942 by the Society of Jesus. Located in Fairfield, Connecticut, it was originally an all-male Jesuit college. In 1947, it became the first Jesuit college to admit female students. Since that time, the school has grown substantially to become a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines.
In 1972, Fairfield University became an independent institution with its own Board of Trustees. This allowed the school to expand its academic program and better serve its student population. Since then, Fairfield University has continued to grow and evolve with new programs such as a nursing school and several graduate programs being added over the years. Additionally, the university has expanded its physical campus with multiple buildings being constructed to house classrooms, student housing and other facilities. Today, Fairfield University is proud to offer over 200 academic programs across five schools and remains committed to providing an excellent education while upholding the Jesuit values of service and social justice.
