Emmanuel College was founded in 1584 by the Church of England. It was originally part of Cambridge University, but it became independent in 1976. The college was named after the Biblical figure of Emmanuel, which symbolizes the presence of God, and its motto is ‘God with us’. The college has a long history of academic excellence, producing many renowned alumni including scientist Isaac Newton and poet John Milton. During World War II, Emmanuel College served as a refuge for students from other universities in Europe who were unable to continue their studies due to the war. In recent years, Emmanuel College has become known for its diverse student body and wide range of courses and activities offered to its students. The college also places a great emphasis on providing an inclusive environment for all members of its community regardless of race, gender or religion.
