Elmhurst College was founded in 1871 by the German Evangelical Synod of North America. It was originally called the Elmhurst Proseminary and was a preparatory school for Christian ministry. The college started out with just two faculty members and five students, but it quickly grew in size. The college began offering college-level classes in 1873, and by 1881 it had become a degree-granting institution. During this time period, the college also changed its name to Elmhurst College.

In 1925, the college moved to its current location on Prospect Avenue in Elmhurst, Illinois. The school’s mission has remained consistent since then: to provide quality education for students of all backgrounds and faiths in an environment that encourages academic excellence and personal growth. Over the years, Elmhurst College has expanded its academic offerings to include more than 60 majors and programs across 19 departments.
