Elmhurst College was founded in 1871 by the German Evangelical Synod of North America. It was originally called the Elmhurst Proseminary and was a preparatory school for Christian ministry. The college started out with just two faculty members and five students, but it quickly grew in size. The college began offering college-level classes in 1873, and by 1881 it had become a degree-granting institution. During this time period, the college also changed its name to Elmhurst College.

In 1925, the college moved to its current location on Prospect Avenue in Elmhurst, Illinois.
