Elizabethtown College was founded in 1899 by a group of local Mennonites. The college was originally established as a two-year institution, offering courses in education, business, and the sciences. In 1925, it became a four-year institution and began offering degrees in liberal arts. Over the following decades, Elizabethtown College expanded its academic offerings to include majors in fields such as accounting, biology, communications, computer science, economics, engineering, history, international studies, nursing and more. The college also increased its student body size and added more dormitories to accommodate the growth. In recent years the college has continued to expand its academic programs by adding new majors such as environmental studies and social work. The college has also continued to grow its student population and continues to offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities for students to take part in.
